KFJC Hosts SF Bay Area Debut of 35,000 Watts + Q&A

Jennifer Waits will participate in a Q&A following a screening of the documentary 35000 Watts: The Story of College Radio.

Gear up for KFJC 89.7 FM’s upcoming 65th anniversary by joining them for a special film screening in celebration of college radio's storied history. KFJC is pleased to be presenting the San Francisco Bay Area debut of the new documentary 35,000 Watts: The Story of College Radio. KFJC is mentioned in the film and the station's own Jennifer Waits provides commentary about college radio history throughout. She will also be on-hand for a Q&A after the movie, alongside other special guests.

The event is a benefit for KFJC, with a suggested donation of $10 at the door. Location: Appreciation Hall at Foothill College (see map) in Los Altos Hills, California. Doors at 6pm/Film at 6:30pm with Q&A to follow. Parking is free in the Foothill College lots.

On this week's edition of the KFJC public affairs show "Thoughtline," Robert Emmett chats with Jennifer Waits about the history and ongoing importance of college radio. Jennifer is featured in the new documentary, 35,000 Watts: The Story of College Radio and will give a preview of what attendees can expect at KFJC's screening of the film at Foothill College's Appreciation Hall on Saturday, July 27 (6pm door/6:30pm show, with Q&A to follow). This film event is both a celebration of KFJC's 65th anniversary as well as a benefit for the station. Sleuthing out the Early Days of College Radio and Preserving this Important History

Jennifer Waits will speak about the history of college radio, including her recent research about the connections between amateur radio and student-led college radio stations. Key to the story are student radio enthusiasts at a number of schools, including Union College and Haverford College in the 1920s. Additionally, she will dig into the legacy of these early efforts and explain how student radio transformed and grew beginning in the 1940s. Jennifer will also talk about her work to help preserve college radio history and the ways that stations, alumni, and radio fans can help.
